NOT OUR CACTI

Attention, Gringos:

Saguaro cactus does not now, nor has it ever, grown in the State of Texas.

The majestic saguaro, while lovely and synonymous with the American Southwest, is not ours to claim. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican State of Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California.

None of these regions are in Texas.

Texas is honored that you think so highly of us as to be the entirety of the American Southwest, but, alas, we are not. It would not be right of us to claim this iconic arborescent succulent.

I love them. I got to see them when I visited Tucson some 20+ years ago. They are breathtaking. But they are not ours.

Please cease and desist in using this gorgeous Carnegiea gigantea to represent Texas. In the meantime, here is a lovely, vintage botanical print featuring the saguaro in all its glory. Enjoy.
